Vert-de-Gris House

Celebrating a delicate balance between historic grandeur and refined modern living, Vert-de-Gris House is a comprehensive town house restoration centered around a serene, muted color story. Taking its name from the soft, patinated greens that wind their way through the interior joinery, this project demonstrates how classical architectural proportions can be sensitively modernised.

The formal reception room is an exercise in symmetry, light, and sophisticated furniture curation. Expansive, floor-to-ceiling multi-pane sash windows with original paneled shutters flank the room, washing the pale grey walls and intricate ceiling coving in soft daylight. A stately white stone fireplace with a contrasting matte black hearth serves as the room's anchor, surmounted by a large abstract canvas that subtly introduces earthy ochre and sky-blue tones. Bespoke floor-to-ceiling alcove shelving houses a collection of minimalist ceramics. The space is populated by a balanced mix of design classics, including a tan leather mid-century sofa, a iconic Eames lounge chair and ottoman, and a minimalist brass-framed glass coffee table over a geometric tonal rug.

On the upper levels, the master suite combines clever space configuration with striking architectural features. An entire wall is dedicated to floor-to-ceiling wardrobe joinery, finished in a clean white with traditional panel detailing and delicate brass handles that blend seamlessly into the room's architecture. In clever contrast to the white wardrobes, the end wall features a custom, wrap-around bookcase painted in a deep, muted sage green. Tailored to fit the sloping eaves of the house, it forms a rich, literate backdrop to a plush tufted grey headboard. Broad bay windows feature white tier-on-tier plantation shutters, allowing the homeowners to masterfully control light and privacy.
