The Inkwell House

Nestled behind a classic London brick facade, Inkwell House is a striking narrative of contrasts, balancing deep, saturated tones with flooded natural light. This rear extension and full-house refurbishment breathes a bold, modern energy into a traditional property, creating a seamless connection between a refined interior and a sculpted, private garden.

From the garden, the extension asserts itself as a crisp, contemporary volume. Clad in deep zinc standing-seam panels, it frames a massive aperture of anthracite bi-fold doors. When fully retracted, the threshold between the internal polished concrete floor and the external timber decking completely dissolves. The garden, softened with architectural ferns, lavender, and structured timber slatted fencing, becomes a direct extension of the living space.

Internally, the project earns its name through the sophisticated use of "inky" tones. In the kitchen, deep, midnight-blue Shaker cabinets anchor the open-plan space, contrasted against a crisp white marble island countertop, classic metro splashback tiles, and brushed brass hardware. A sprawling overhead rooflight cuts through the ceiling, flooding the heart of the kitchen with daylight and ensuring the dark joinery feels sophisticated rather than enclosing. Honoring the home's original DNA, an exposed London stock brick chimney breast stands opposite the kitchen, complete with an integrated wood-burning stove to provide texture, warmth, and a cozy focal point for the dining area.
