Frame and Hearth Extension
Blurring the boundaries between industrial edge and residential warmth, Frame and Hearth Extension is a striking structural intervention to a traditional brick terrace. The project takes its name from the prominent black structural framing that defines the new rear facade and the deliberate alignment of spaces around central, tactile focal points.
From the garden, the extension reads as a powerful architectural statement. Framing views of a secluded, timber-fenced courtyard, ultra-slimline black metal bi-fold doors open up entirely, dissolving the threshold between the interior polished micro-cement flooring and the external brick terrace. A sprawling flat rooflight punches through the deep extension, slicing along the kitchen boundary to flood what would normally be the darkest pocket of a terraced plot with direct daylight.
Internally, the extension shifts into a highly calibrated culinary space that celebrates raw, authentic materials. The kitchen runs parallel to the glazing, featuring a minimalist layout with a black range cooker, subway splashback tiling, and exposed wooden structural shelving that adds a layer of raw craftsmanship. Three industrial pendant lamps hang low over the island, defining the space as a casual gathering point.
